Vom Holzbach Puppies

Past litters:

Please note that we only sell puppies to serious hunting homes.

When you get a puppy from us, you can expect a well-bred, versatile hunting dog with demonstrated hunting abilities reaching far back into the pedigree. These are high-drive, active hunting dogs who excel in upland hunting, waterfowl hunting, small game hunting, and big game recovery. Regular hunting of a variety of game animals along with year-round training allows them to exercise their minds and bodies in order to be well-balanced dogs. Without this lifelong commitment, no serious hunting dog can be expected to reach their full potential as hunters or as companions.

If you are a casual hunter, this is not the right breed for you. Being honest about your expectations and your ability to make this time commitment will ensure you and your future dog will both have a happy outcome.

We will support you throughout the pup’s development and training. In return, we ask that puppy buyers commit to a few basic things for their own benefit as well as the overall benefit of the breed:

  1. Proper Socialization, Exposure, and Training: From the moment the pups arrive in their new homes, they should be given every opportunity to succeed as hunters and as well-balanced dogs. This includes environmental socialization and age-appropriate exposure and training. This takes time, focus, and dedication—please be sure you are willing to make this commitment. Have questions about this? Ask!

  2. JGHV Testing: At a minimum, we ask that puppies run the VJP (Spring natural ability test) in their eligible year. The performance data from these tests is invaluable for determining the success of the breeding and the preservation of key hunting skills. We will absolutely support you and help get you connected with local resources for training and preparation.

  3. Hip X-rays: Data from the entire litter is useful in ensuring that genetic issues such as hip dysplasia are not being carried forward in breeding. We ask for pups to have their hips x-rayed at your vet and the images sent to Germany for official evaluation. This is done between 1-2 years of age.

Price

Puppies are $1800 with a $200 nonrefundable deposit to reserve a spot on our waitlist. The balance is due before the puppy leaves our home. Deposits will be refunded if the breeding doesn’t take or if there aren’t enough puppies born.

Puppy Selection

You may select the gender and preferred color, but we will make final placement decisions based on our discussions of your interests and intentions and our assessment of the puppies during their early development. If you have an interest in testing and breeding a DL within the rules of the DL-GNA, please let us know and we’ll work together to identify potential breeding candidates from the litter. No guarantees are made that any particular puppy will achieve breeding certification.

Registration

Puppies will be registered with the Deutsch Langhaar Verband and NAVHDA and will be eligible for testing in both the JGHV and NAVHDA systems. Note that only JGHV testing is recognized for breeding certification. The puppies will have a NAVHDA breeding restriction that can be lifted once they meet the requirements for DL-GNA breeding certification.

These dogs mean the world to us and we are committed to helping you get the most out of your new puppy. Don’t be shy about asking questions and staying in contact throughout the dog’s lifetime. Hearing about how our puppies are doing out in the world is incredibly rewarding for us.

Our expectations and commitments are outlined in our breeding contract, linked below:

We are DL-GNA members and adhere to their breeding regulations.
